Hip replacement is now a routine procedure. In Germany alone, it is carried out around 200,000 times a year, enabling many arthrosis sufferers to lead a practically normal life again. The success of the treatment depends to a large extent on the surgeon’s skill and the choice of implant and material.

Minimally invasive surgery through sophisticated operating techniques

In the last few years, hip replacement surgery has seen a number of developments of great benefit to patients. Surgical techniques are becoming increasingly sophisticated and in many cases minimally invasive procedures can be used. This has the advantage that the patient suffers less pain postoperatively and the rehabilitation phase is much shorter, permitting a more rapid return to normal life.

Many new prostheses using extremely hardwearing materials have been developed in the last few years to increase the durability of the hip replacement. An experienced hip specialist will help you to decide which model is most suitable in your case.

Apart from a full hip replacement, in some cases a superficial replacement is sufficient. In this case the femoral head is capped rather than being completely removed. This has the advantage that the anatomical situation is not significantly altered and the patient does not have to learn to walk again as is sometimes the case with a full hip replacement.

Note: The capping of the femoral head is a much more complicated procedure than a full hip replacement and should be carried out only by an experienced surgeon.
