The shoulder is the most complex joint in the human body. Thanks to its structure, it combines maximum mobility with just the right amount of stability. However, this complex structure is prone to traumatic injuries and to wear. Shoulder surgery saw a revolutionary development in the 1990s with the introduction of innovative arthroscopic procedures. It became possible to observe and classify hitherto unknown injury models and to treat them using a minimally invasive technique. Compared to knee arthroscopy, which is a well established procedure, shoulder reconstructions and arthroscopic procedures still present a particular challenge and are carried out professionally in only a few state-of-the-art centers. Dr. Michael Lehmann, founder of the international Athletikum Group, has specialized in shoulder diseases and injuries since 1987. The International Shoulder Group team has carried out well over 20,000 arthroscopic and reconstructive shoulder operations. With the exception of complex revisions and endoprosthetic shoulder reconstructions, practically all shoulder problems can be carried out using minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques.
The qualification of the treating specialist and the technical equipment must, of course, be in line with international standards. Compliance with and cost-intensive maintenance of these standards are prerequisites for good and dependable results without complications. With scientific quality management, high quality and outstanding results are reproducible. More than other types of joint surgery, shoulder operations call for professional follow-up physiotherapy, management of the operation and physiotherapy and, if necessary, targeted training for specific types of sport. An ideal result cannot be achieved without this systematic coordination.
